From Botox injections to liposuction, aesthetic clinic or beauty salons are essential go-to places to receive professional cosmetic treatment. Regardless of invasive or non-invasive treatment, these treatments are commonly attained to improve or enhance the look of your skin and body feature. Here are the 7 most popular beauty treatments below.
Botox, short for ‘botulinum toxin’, is a cosmetic treatment derived from the Clostridium Botulinum bacteria. Botox is commonly used to reduce fine lines and wrinkles by injecting into the muscle using a thin syringe. The injection causes the muscles to paralyse for a certain amount of time, typically between 3-4 months, which is the length of time that your complexion will be smooth and wrinkle-free before the effect starts to wear off. The procedure only takes between 10 to 15 minutes and requires no anaesthetic prior to the Botox treatment. After the injection, results are usually noticeable within 24 to 48 hours.
2. Dermal Fillers
Like Botox, dermal fillers also involve injections. While a Botox injection is commonly performed around the forehead and eyes, dermal fillers are a plumping technique used to enhance the lips or cheeks. It is also an effective treatment for minimising deep lines and wrinkles. Substances like collagen, hyaluronic acid, calcium hydroxylapatite and liquid silicone are some of the FDA-approved usage for dermal fillers. In some cases, your own fat may also used as a filler for injection by harvesting it from your body. The effects of dermal fillers are temporary and last between 6 to 18 months.
Dermabrasion is a form of exfoliating procedure that uses a special instrument to “sand” away the top layers of the facial skin. The dermabrasion treatment is typically performed to reduce fine lines, acne scars and wrinkles. Depending on your skin condition and other related factors, the treatment helps improve the appearance of the skin by 20-50%.
Unlike the deep exfoliating technique used in the dermabrasion treatment, microdermabrasion is considerably mild and less aggressive. During the procedure, a handheld device or machine is used to spray tiny crystals onto the skin to gently remove the superficial layer of the outer skin (usually 10-15 microns of skin). The procedure usually takes about 30-60 minutes. Microdermabrasion is effective for treating acne, discoloured skin, enlarged pores, age and sunspots as well as reducing the appearance of stretch marks.
5. Laser Hair Removal
Laser hair removal is a commonly-known cosmetic procedure that uses highly concentrated laser light to beam into hair follicles. The laser light causes damage to the follicles, rendering them unable to stimulate hair growth anymore. Laser hair removal can be done on any part of the body but is often used to remove unwanted hair from the underarm, arm, face, leg and bikini line. The treatment works best on light skin with dark hair. Depending on your hair condition and skin type, permanent hair loss on the specific area can be achievable after 3 to 8 sessions.
6. Eyelid surgery
Also known as blepharoplasty, eyelid surgery is a surgical procedure to generally improve the appearance of the eyelids. It is usually performed separately on the upper and lower eyelids. Eyelid surgery is beneficial for treating loose or sagging skin that causes visible folds, remove bagginess and dark circles under the eyes, drooping eyelids and fine wrinkles on the lower eyelids. Depending on the procedure, the results of eyelid surgery are typically visible within 10-14 days after the treatment.
Also known as lipoplasty or simply dubbed as ‘lipo’, liposuction is a cosmetic treatment that helps to remove unwanted body fat. During the liposuction procedure, a hollow instrument called cannula is used to “suck” out the fat under the skin with the assistance of a high-pressure vacuum. Common body areas like stomach, thighs, hips and buttocks are the most targeted areas for liposuction. After the procedure, compression bandages or an elasticized support corset/garment needs to be worn for several weeks to reduce bruising and swelling. The recovery time for liposuction usually takes around two weeks.
